Who is Prisoner 428051? is designed as a citizenship stimulus exercise for use across KS2,3 and 4.
The Learning Object explores the issue of crime and punishment and the reality of incarceration. It is deliberately open-ended to allow pupils to explore their own feelings and discuss and empathise with the stimulus materials.
The materials, from the identification of the prisoner to the nature of his crime, are deliberately left non-specific so that they can be applied to the widest range of circumstances and used to explore the implications before, during and after being found guilty of a criminal offence.
The generalised nature of the materials might also help if a pupil has a family member currently in prison.
The simplicity and general nature of the main concepts means that this resource could be used with increasing sophistication to support citizenship activities at KS2,3 or 4.
The resource can be used as a starter activity or prompt for whole class discussion. Additional questions, such as why the prisoner has not been identified, can support work on civil and human rights. Alternatively, the resource can be used as the basis of a writing frame for individual work or as a comparative resource exploring the changing face of crime and punishment.
